History
The first airport was Miami City Airport on the original site of MIA, which opened in the 1920s. Pan American World Airways began an expanded adjacent facility Pan American Field, in 1928. Built on 116 acres of land on 36th Street, this was the only mainland airport in the eastern US with a port of entry on-site. In 1943 Miami Army Airfield opened south of Pan American Field, and while separated by railroad tracks, the two were frequently listed as a single facility. In 1945, the City of Miami created a Port Authority and raised bond funds to purchase 36th Street Airport, the former Pan American Field. These combined airfields established the modern Miami International Airport.
