Miami International Airport was initially known as Wilcox Field. The airport has come a long way from its origins and in 2018; 45 million passengers traveled through its gates. This traffic makes MIA the 13th busiest airport in the US, the most active in Florida, and the 41st busiest airport in the world.
The first airport was Miami City Airport on the original site of MIA that opened in the 1920s. Pan American World Airways began an expanded adjacent facility Pan American Field, in 1928. Built on 116 acres of land on 36th Street this was the only mainland airport in the eastern US with a port of entry on-site.
In 1943 Miami Army Airfield opened south of Pan American Field, and while separated by railroad tracks the two were frequently listed as a single facility. In 1945, the City of Miami created a Port Authority and raised bond funds to purchase 36th Street Airport, the former Pan American Field. These combined airfields established the modern Miami International Airport.
The airport is located eight miles northwest of Downtown Miami in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Part of the greater metropolitan Miami area, the airport is between the cities of Miami, Hialeah, Doral, Miami Springs, Virginia Gardens, and Fontainebleau.
MIA boasts four runways, with the longest runway 9/27 capable of landing an Airbus A380. There is one fixed-base operator (FBO) with a private terminal open for 24-hours of service daily. Additional ground amenities for travel into Miami and the surrounding cities include, town cars, limousines, and rental cars at the FBO.
