Harry Reid International Airport, designated as LAS, is the primary commercial airport for Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada. It is situated about five miles south of downtown Las Vegas and is the principal entry point to the Las Vegas Strip and the broader Clark County area. Positioned adjacent to the Strip, LAS is recognized as Nevada’s most significant commercial hub, accommodating a high volume of regional and domestic flights.
LAS is a bustling commercial and general aviation hub, experiencing intense competition for takeoff and landing slots, particularly among private planes. In 2019, the airport facilitated the travel of over 51 million passengers, making it the 8th busiest airport globally regarding total aircraft movements.
Owned by Clark County and operated by its Department of Aviation, Harry Reid International Airport was previously named after Pat McCarran, a former senator who played a significant role in the development of aviation in Las Vegas and across the country.
The airport opened for commercial flights in 1948 and has undergone significant expansion. LAS has four long runways, all meeting the needs of takeoff and landings by business jet class aircraft. The commercial terminals are to the east, and the airport’s west side contains facilities for private executive jets, fixed-base operators, and helicopters.
The airport was officially renamed from Mccarran International Airport to Harry Reid International Airport in December 2021.
Harry Reid International Airport was also the first airport in the US to establish Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) in 1997. CUTE allows for the shared use of ticket counters and gates to manage the increasing number of airlines at Harry Reid. In 2003, it introduced Common-Use Self-Service (CUSS) kiosks to enable passengers to check-in and print boarding passes. In 2005, the airport began offering complimentary Wi-Fi at its terminals.
There are also slot machines at the airport. Reno Airport and Harry Reid are the only two airports offering this in the US.
LAS Harry Reid International Airport has four runways.
The region typically experiences dry weather, which allows for visual flying rules to be in place most of the time. The airport consists of two terminals and 5 concourses, totaling 108 gates.
This airport hosts two luxury FBOs, Signature Flight Support and Atlantic Aviation, specializing in discreet arrivals for VIP flyers and offering premium travel services. Both have private FBO terminals for arrivals and departures. They offer services such as:
