History

The airport was established in 1938 and was utilized as an RAF base during World War II. After the war, it was returned to civil use and named Ringway, after an Anglo-Saxon village surrounded by a circular enclosure. The airport’s expansion occurred gradually in the 1950s and 60s, during which Silver City Airways and Douglas Dakota Airlines started operating out of Manchester.
