In 1928, the Navy began developing Long Beach as an air base, and the city built a hangar and administrative building to house the fleet. The Navy eventually commissioned the air base on May 10, 1928. The Army Air Corps also built a hangar at the airport. The construction of these administrative buildings and hangars was the beginning of the airport’s significant development. It was formerly known as Long Beach Municipal Airport. This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a primary commercial service airport.
