Ellington Airport

Ellington Airport, EFD, KEFD

Located 17 miles southeast of Downtown Houston, Ellington Airport is one of the three Houston Airports managed by the City of Houston’s Department of Aviation. Ellington Airport, formerly Ellington Field, is open to the public and shared with the military and NASA. Houston’s other two commercial airports are George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, which both offer FBOs available to service the needs of private aircraft.

Facilities

The airport is located in Harris County, Texas, and has three active runways: a 9,001-foot (300 m) ILS CAT I, an 8,001-foot (2,439 m), and a 4,609-foot (1,405 m). The airport relieves both George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport, handling diverted aircraft during weather conditions and peak traffic times. In addition to its military use, the airport also supports a number of NASA-related operations. It is the base for NASA’s administrative, cargo, and high-altitude aircraft from the US Air Force and Gulfstream Shuttle Training Aircraft.

FBO, Private Jets, and the Houston Space Port

EFD airport is 17 miles southeast of downtown Houston. EFD or KEFD is another designated general aviation reliever airport. EFD has no commercial scheduled flights and has three runways. Ellington Field is near the Johnson Space Center and the Houston Spaceport. There is one FBO for private jet arrivals and departures. Aside from serving as a general aviation reliever, Ellington Airport is also licensed to handle space planes from the commercial space industry. It is one of only a few global relievers to do so. It has a specialized air traffic control tower that handles arriving and departing spacecraft.
