In addition, the company was forced to phase out its MD-80 and MD-90 jets. In the 1960s, Boeing became active in the NASA contracting and defense industry. During the Cold War, Boeing was selected as the prime contractor for the Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missile system. The first test launch was in February 1961, and later, Minuteman II and Minuteman III were developed by Boeing. The company also won the contract to design the first short-range attack missile (SRAM) and produced over 1,000 by the early 1970s.

Boeing in Seattle, Washington, the company has expanded over the years and merged with McDonnell Douglas in 1997. Boeing moved its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, Illinois, in 2001.
