Boeing Field

Boeing Field, officially known as King County International Airport, is a vital aviation hub located in Seattle, Washington. This airport serves various aviation activities, including cargo operations, general aviation, military, and air taxi services. It is strategically positioned just a few miles south of downtown Seattle, making it a convenient choice for both business and leisure travelers.

One of Boeing Field’s unique aspects is its role in hosting Air Force One when the President of the United States visits the Seattle area. This highlights the airport’s strategic importance and its capability to handle high-profile and secure operations. Further, its multifaceted operations, from cargo and commercial flights to general aviation and emergency services, make it an indispensable asset to the region.

Several regional passenger airlines, such as Kenmore Air, operate daily flights between Seattle-Boeing Field, Friday Harbor, and Eastsound/Orcas Island. Boeing Field is also a base for emergency medical services (EMS) helicopters, underscoring its importance in providing critical services to the community.

About Boeing Field Airport

The airport’s rich history dates back to its establishment by William E. Boeing, the founder of The Boeing Company, in 1928. Originally designed to serve as a test and delivery site for Boeing aircraft, it has evolved into a multifaceted facility that accommodates various aviation services. Boeing Field has played a significant role in the development of commercial aviation and has been a key player in the region’s economic growth.

Boeing Field is not just about commercial and cargo flights but also home to several aviation-related businesses, including flight schools, aircraft maintenance companies, and charter operations. The airport’s two runways cater to various aircraft, from small single-engine planes to large commercial jets.

Owned and operated by the Port of Seattle, the airport is just five miles south of Seattle’s downtown. Initially, BFI worked as the region’s commercial airport until Sea-Tac opened nine miles south in Tukwila, Washington. Boeing Corporation has flight and manufacturing facilities on the field, and many corporate and business jets are based here.

BFI is situated along two major roads, making spotting aircraft easy. The southern side is ideal for viewing Boeing commercial aircraft, while its eastern edge provides a peaceful spot to observe general aviation and business aviation activities.

Boeing Field Airport: Noise Program

The Boeing Field Airport Noise Management Program is designed to accurately measure aircraft noise levels in surrounding neighborhoods, aiming to provide reliable data for evaluating noise reduction strategies. This program utilizes six noise monitors placed in nearby communities to gather data effectively.

The program employs a system named PlaneNoise to manage and track noise complaints. This system enables the Noise Management team to address community concerns by collecting noise reports and comments from the public. Residents can submit noise complaints online or by calling the Noise Hotline at 206-316-2515.

Further, the program incorporates PublicVue, developed by L3 Harris, which allows community members to monitor flights in real-time using the same technology as the Noise Management team. PublicVue also enables users to leave comments on any aircraft being tracked.

The program enforces several regulations to minimize noise disturbance, including

  • Airport curfews prohibiting touch and go between 10 pm and 7 am, as per Title 15.16.150.
  • Preferential runways, with the 13/31R runway lights being out of service from 10 PM-7 AM.
  • Engine run-up restrictions that limit ground run-ups between 10 pm and 7 AM, to reduce noise during nighttime hours.
