An Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) is a compact, self-contained device installed on many aircraft, particularly large jets and long-range aircraft, that provides power for onboard systems when the main engines are not running. The APU is a crucial component of modern aviation, offering electrical and pneumatic power necessary for aircraft functions before takeoff, during boarding, or while parked at a remote stand.
Unlike the main engines, the APU does not provide propulsion. Instead, its role is to support various non-flight operations, such as:
In private aviation, APUs are especially valuable because they allow passengers to enjoy a fully climate-controlled cabin, powered lighting, and operational Wi-Fi while still on the tarmac—all without relying on airport ground services or running the main engines. This creates a more comfortable and seamless experience for JetOptions clients as they board or prepare for departure from a private FBO terminal.
Aircraft APUs typically generate 115-volt AC at 400 Hz, which differs from standard household power (50/60 Hz), and some also supply 28V DC depending on the aircraft’s system requirements. These systems are sophisticated, often built by specialized aerospace manufacturers such as Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney, and are designed to operate autonomously and reliably, even in extreme weather conditions.
Some of the heavy jets and ultra-long-range jets in the JetOptions fleet are equipped with high-performance auxiliary power units (APUs), enabling operations at remote airports, during extended ground times, or on missions that require greater self-sufficiency.
While APUs are also used in military aircraft, naval vessels, and large ground vehicles, their most visible role in business aviation is ensuring a smooth, efficient, and independent operation, especially valuable when operating out of smaller, less-equipped airfields.
