Today, Teterboro Airport (TEB)  handles general aviation flights. There has been some discussion about phasing out the airport or diverting flights to other airports in the surrounding area. Some are entirely against shutting down the airport because it is the backbone of the economy in the Hackensack area, supporting nearly 15,000 jobs every single year. Revenues include upwards of $2 billion on an annual basis.

TEB is also a primary resource for organ transplant delivery and other vital medical air services that would otherwise be difficult in a typical airport like Kennedy or LaGuardia. Needing to be in the air on short notice, Teterboro provides the facility for medical air charter services to save lives. So, the Teterboro Airport will remain open for the foreseeable future as it is a critical facility for travelers from far and wide.

Luxurious Facilities Will Enhance Your Private Jet Charter Travel

There are 23 hangars within the airport property, as well as an operations building, a maintenance facility, and three fuel farms. The control tower first went into full operation back in 1975 and is still running strong.

You’ll also see four different runways – 1-19 and 6-24. Runway 6-24 is a total of 6,013 feet long by 150 feet wide.  The named Runway 6 has an ILS (Instrument Landing System) and a MALS-R (Medium Approach Lighting System – R) while runway 24 has a PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) and REIL (Runway End Identification Lighting). These runways were completely redone in 2010.

Runway 1-19 is 7,000 feet in length by 150 feet in width. Numbers 1 and 19 both have REIL systems. There is a VASI system on Runway 1, while runway 19 has an ILS. 1-19 was completely redone in 2011.

Because Teterboro Airport is a relief airport, you will not see any aircraft over 100,000 pounds. They keep to slower and smaller air traffic to reduce traffic from otherwise busy commercial airports.

It is easy to get to Teterboro Airport as cars, taxis, town cars, and limos all operate at the airport. Please remember that no centralized parking facility is available at Teterboro.  All flight parking and pickups are at the individual terminals and FBO operators.

Teterboro is Part of Aviation History

Teterboro Airport is steeped in history as it was once the most prestigious airport in the New York area. In fact, it is the oldest airport still in operation in the New York City area. Teterboro began in 1917. Back in World War I, North American Aviation operated a manufacturing plant on the property. The first flight from this airport was in 1919, more than 100 years ago.

This particular airport was Charles Lindbergh’s favorite airport to fly to. In fact, he often flew in to meet the company that built the engine for his famous trans-Atlantic flight. Another name you might recognize is Amelia Earheart. She flew to the Teterboro Airport to prep for her trans-Atlantic flight.

Back in 1930, the Witteman-Lewis XNBL-1, also known as the Barling Bomber, was an ambitious long-range strategic bomber design. It was, in fact, the largest aircraft in the entire world. The first turn of its engines occurred at the Witteman Aircraft Company Factory, which later became Teterboro Airport. It was the biggest American-made bomber-style plane at that time.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey purchased the Teterboro Airport in 1949 and initially leased it to Pan Am World Airways. This agreement held in place until 2000. Inside the airport, you’ll find the Aviation Hall of Fame of New Jersey, which is worth a visit on its own.
