Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced that the Gulfstream G280 recently added to its growing list of city-pair records, this time linking Paris with Abu Dhabi.

On April 24, the super mid-sized aircraft traveled from Paris-Le Bourget Airport to Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. The distance of 2,908 nautical miles/5,386 kilometers was covered in 6 hours and 16 minutes at an average speed of Mach 0.82.

Pending approval by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association, the G280’s 51st city-pair mark will be sent to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland for consideration as a world record.

“It’s a testament to the G280’s many attributes that we’ve delivered more than 60 of these aircraft to operators in 11 countries,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “The G280 had the best range, speed, fuel efficiency and cabin comfort in its class when it entered the marketplace in November 2012, and nothing has changed. It is also one of the most reliable aircraft in the industry.”

Originally projected to fly 3,400 nm/6,297 km, the G280 surpassed expectations by 200 nm/370 km, resulting in more city-pair connections, excellent fuel efficiency and lower operating costs for customers. The aircraft has tremendous performance capabilities and a superior cabin with the Gulfstream-designed cabin management and high-definition entertainment systems, industry-leading sound levels, 19 super-sized windows and in-flight access to the baggage compartment.

Airlines over order at Paris Airshow

The last week was a good one to be a commercial aircraft salesman. Airlines and leasing companies placed options for 1,223 aircraft worth $69 billion at list prices at the Paris Airshow this week. (Obviously many of these aircraft will not be delivered to airlines and no one paid list price, but we should not let that get in the way of a good story).

Airbus and Boeing have sold out production for an astonishing eight to 10 years. Low oil prices are helping airlines make profits and carriers and leasing companies are keen to buy.  Both manufacturers have had three years of record orders. This is a complete contrast to business jet OEMs where backlogs are still falling. Commercial OEMs are upping production whilst we will see less business jets delivered this year rather than next. Bombardier did not announce big orders for the C-Series, but hopefully these are on the way.

Business jets do not just give pleasure to the people that fly in them. Many people get a buzz just from just seeing a one.

Others take this passion more seriously. There are thousands of amateur aviation photographers (many as good as professionals) and planespotters looking to track down business jets.

Whilst most photographers just collect images, planespotters collect aircraft registrations or manufacturers serial numbers (MSNs) by seeing the aircraft. (You can usually work out the MSN from the aircraft registration, although this is hard in some countries.)

How Pension Funds, Universities and Endowments Pay for Private Jets

One of the class markers of the private equity industry is that its members routinely fly on private jets. That’s often because the larger and even some of the smaller firms charge their private jet travel to private equity portfolio companies. That means that the cost is borne first and foremost by investors in private equity like public pension funds, private pension funds, universities like Harvard and Yale, and other foundations and endowments.



 

The enormous costs of private jets, while they are borne by the investors, are almost entirely hidden from them. PE firms keep investors in the dark by having the portfolio companies they’ve bought on behalf of their investors pay these jet bills. Amazingly, investors have been fooled by this simple ruse for decades – it’s as if your stockbroker deducts his fee from your account, and you regard his services as free because you never see a bill.

Now admittedly, there are cases, if you are taking a team of people from one not-well-air-serviced location to another, when private jet travel is cheaper than flying commercial. But those instances are rare.

Low oil a boom for private jet business?

As the price of oil continues its bumpy ride, the broadly lower cost per barrel could present a new business opportunity for the world’s largest private jet company.

NetJets, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway which offers fractional ownership and private jet rental, told CNBC that low oil prices – now down around 50 percent from highs last summer — could boost their business.

“If you are an oil company and you’re invested in a fleet of your own private jets, clearly this is the moment where you’ll look back at your investments and your assets and think: ‘Was this the best decision?’,” NetJets’ Head of European Sales Marine Eugene said. “I think this is a tremendous opportunity for us.”

Spike Aerospace’s latest, luxury high-speed jet will be able to fly from NYC to London in just three hours. The Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet can fly 450 mph faster than any current civilian jet, which means cutting most flight times by half.

However, the supersonic experience comes at a high cost: the finished S-512 will cost between $60 and $80 million. (Which is great if your itinerary goes from “Paris to Dubai for shopping and entertainment and back home in time for dinner,” as the Spike Aerospace update suggested.)

The high-speed jet can hold 18 passengers at a time, and feature a Muliplex Digital cabin. That’s to say: a windowless cabin equipped with a high-definition, full-screen display that can play anything from a live feed of the world outside, movies, to a business presentation your team is thrilled about.

Investment in downturn has posed challenge to rivals

Even when the workers who build Gulfstream’s G650 business jet are on a break, it is easy to see that the world’s longest-range business jet is in demand. Every corner of the assembly building, on the edge of the historic port city of Savannah, is filled with components for new aircraft. Fuselages in various states of construction are jammed in nose to tail. Outside, aircraft wait to be fitted with luxurious interiors before heading off to start shuttling the world’s business and political elite between continents.

The G650, introduced in 2012, is the most obvious illustration of how Gulfstream, part of General Dynamics, the military contractor, is benefiting from the resilient demand from the world’s wealthiest flyers for the most capable private aircraft. Demand for large jets — which accounted for 117 of the 150 aircraft that Gulfstream delivered last year — continued to grow throughout the economic downturn, fuelled by new demand from China and other emerging markets. Orders for the smaller aircraft popular with US and European companies for shorter trips slumped.

Airbus E-Fan flies across English Channel

Didier Esteyne flew a plane powered solely by electricity across the English Channel, despite being beaten to the challenge hours earlier by another pilot.

A French pilot has flown a manned electric plane across the English Channel, despite missing out on making history at becoming the first pilot to do so.

Didier Esteyne was beaten to the challenge by a few hours by stunt pilot Hugues Duval.

The flight in Airbus Group’s E-Fan 1.0 plane flew in the reverse direction of Bleriot’s landmark Channel crossing 106 years ago on July 25, 1909.

He said: “Like so many others in aviation history, Louis Bleriot has been a hero and inspiration to me and it gives me great pride that I am able to honour his legacy.”

The two-seat E-Fan has a 31ft wing-span, is two metres in height, with a total engine power of 60 kiloWatt and it operates on a 120-cell lithium polymer battery system.

Private Jets Flood Sun Valley for Mogul Camp

The flood of private jets pouring into Sun Valley for the annual media mogul’s conference is likely to overcrowd the local airport, officials say.

As the Allen & Co. conference kicked off at the Sun Valley Resort in Idaho, officials at the nearby Friedman Memorial Airport expected up to 200 private jets landed Tuesday, making it one of the biggest private jet events of the year.

Additional planes are projected to come and go throughout the week, as billionaires, tech tycoons and media titans head to the five-day dealfest and ideas conference that’s become known as “billionaire’s summer camp.”

Why the ‘Uber of private jets’ is doomed to fail

The “sharing economy” refers to peer-to-peer technology companies that enable people to rent out unused assets, spare rooms, and parked cars. “Sharing” sounds touchier-feelier than “renting” or “brokering”. Its beauty is that the companies doing the enabling don’t own what they sell. Airbnb, the world’s largest lodging company, is valued at $24bn, but owns no hotels; Uber, at $50bn, doesn’t own a single car. Brilliant!

The explosive growth of the sharing economy has been driven by the networking effect of the internet. Now, a gold-rush mentality is at hand. Homestay enables you to rent out your spare room. Hovelstay brings garages and potting sheds into the fold. There are dozens of others. Vrumi turns your spare bedroom into someone else’s office. Where next for “space-recycling”? That luggage box atop your car, those empty rubbish bins … monetise them!

These disruptors are discovering whole strata of consumers who previously couldn’t afford to travel and lodge. Can space-recycling go upmarket? Onefinestay has shown that it can. The Stockholm Syndrome that held travelers captive in outmoded and expensive hotels and taxis is melting in the heat of creative destruction. No doubt Uber and Airbnb will evolve into sinister yet hackable personal databases, but that’s another story.

Is private aviation next for Uberisation? Rise is an American start-up aspiring to add “dead legs” and jet downtime to the sharing bucket list. Monetising idle jets is the Holy Grail, but I confidently predict Rise’s fall. However, Nick Kennedy, Rise’s messianic founder, deserves credit for fusing a subscription model to the sharing model.

Flying on a private jet is getting much cheaper

Several startups are now allowing travelers to book single seats — which is making this a more affordable option.

The appeal of private air travel is hard to ignore: easy-to-reach airports, quiet terminals, no lines or long waits, reliable departure times, a peaceful flight. Traditionally, such privilege came at a steep price. You either had to charter your own aircraft with a broker or invest in a fractional ownership plan.

With the advent of by-the-hour programs like the Marquis Jet Card from NetJets, prices have come down a bit in recent years, though paying $5,000 an hour (or more) for a private plane is still relatively common. But several upstart companies are now allowing travelers to book single seats rather than entire planes—finally making this form of travel relatively affordable for people who don’t count themselves among the mogul and movie-star set.

Gulfstream G280 Gets Performance Boost Through Software Upgrade

Update Improves Landing Distance, Enhances Flight Management System and Enables Synthetic Vision

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. announced that an avionics software upgrade resulting in improved aircraft performance is now available for the Gulfstream G280.

The new PlaneView280TM software, offered in conjunction with supplier Rockwell Collins, results in slower approach speeds, shorter landing distances, and enhanced flight management system performance.

“The G280 was already a top-performing aircraft in its class,” said Dan Nale, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “With this upgrade, the aircraft’s performance is even better. Our customers will appreciate the increased functionality and utility, the operational improvements, the enhanced display layout and the improved situational awareness.”

The upgrade reduces G280 approach speeds by up to 9 knots. The landing distance with the new software is 2,380 feet/725 meters, a decrease of 270 ft/82 m.

Cessna Citation Latitude begins European tour

Cessna has begun a three-week European demonstration tour of its new Citation Latitude with the annual Business and General Aviation day (BGAD), held on 15 September at London Biggin Hill airport – the first stop on its multi-city itinerary.

The $16.3 million, midsize business jet is the newest aircraft in Cessna’s 16-strong product line. It secured FAA certification in June, following a three-and-a-half year development effort, and entered service with a US owner in August.

Rolls-Royce stays committed to business aviation despite £50m profit hit

Engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has stressed the continued importance of business aviation to the UK firm, despite falling demand in the segment contributing around £50 million ($77 million) to an expected £300 million profit “headwind” in 2016.

Not only has R-R been hit by the falling production rates of Bombardier‘s flagship Global 5000 and 6000 – which are powered by the BR710A2-20 – but it has also been losing market share to its rivals in the lucrative large-cabin sector.

Bombardier Shares Hit New 22-Year Low on Concerns About Business Jets, Cseries

Bombardier‘s stock hit a new 22-year low Friday amid reports that its new Global 7000-8000 business jet may be delayed and erroneous concerns that a major Chinese airline has turned to Boeing instead of the Montreal company’s CSeries.

The shares hit a low of $1.84 in early trading, but were down just one cent in early afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

That followed a more than 10 per cent dip on Thursday.

The last time Bombardier‘s shares (TSX:BBD.B) plunged so low was in 1993.

Thursday’s selloff followed a Bloomberg report that cited a company official who said Bombardier‘s new leadership team is conducting “a full review of all aspects of the program, including its schedule” for its new Global aircraft.

David Tyerman of Canaccord Genuity said such a delay should not come as a surprise given that Bombardier hasn’t provided an update on the development of the Global 7000 and 8000, including the date for first flight.

On The Radar: Head-Mounted Display

Business aviation has long been at the forefront of new technology—most of it developed to improve pilots’ situation awareness and reduce their workload—that would be the envy of commercial airline crews.

An example is synthetic vision, a 3D rendering of runways and terrain that gives pilots a sunny-day virtual view of the flight path in front of them. The first FAA-certified application of such a system was available as part of the Gulfstream Aerospace PlaneView flight deck in 2009. It could be as many as five years before such technology begins to make its way into commercial and business aviation as part of a voluntary safety upgrade movement spurred by the government and the Industry Commercial Aviation Safety Team.

What sort of technologies might be on business aviation’s horizon? One possibility is head-mounted displays (HMD) for pilots, which could be retrofitted in existing cockpits and for aircraft in development.

New Facility Expected To Bring 100 Jobs And Doubles Site’s Aircraft Capacity

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced it has officially expanded its service center in Brunswick, Georgia, with the opening of a newly constructed hangar. The hangar has been fully operational since May 29, 2015.

The nearly 110,000-square-foot/9,290 square-meter hangar at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport complements an adjacent Gulfstream maintenance facility and completions center. The new building accommodates all Gulfstream aircraft models and more than doubles the site’s under-roof capacity from a mixture of seven large-cabin aircraft to as many as 16. The expansion, which was announced in January 2014, has resulted in more than 60 new jobs at the site. Approximately 40 more positions are expected to be added this year.

Textron Aviation turns integration focus to piston-powered aircraft

Since its founding less than 18 months ago, Textron Aviation has been quite busy. First, there was the critical task of blending two historically competitive organisations – Cessna and Beechcraft – into a unitary corporate system. Cessna also needed to concentrate on completing certification programmes of several upgraded and new aircraft in its Citation jet family.

For the pistons business, on the other hand, the focus through the transition appeared to be on maintaining the status quo. A 2012 teaser by the now-defunct Hawker Beechcraft showing four new aircraft concepts on the drawing boards, including three new small turboprops and one piston-powered aircraft, has received no promotion by the new management. A diesel-powered version of the Cessna 182 is now months behind schedule, with no public timetable for delivering the new aircraft.

Despite the slow pace of progress on product development, there are signs entering this year’s EAA AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh that the next and final step in the integration of Textron Aviation plan has already started, and it is focusing on working out the pistons business.
