Gulfstream G280 Adds Another Speed Record to Books

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced that the Gulfstream G280 recently added to its growing list of city-pair records, this time linking Paris with Abu Dhabi.

Gulfstream G280 sets record

On April 24, the super mid-sized aircraft traveled from Paris-Le Bourget Airport to Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. The distance of 2,908 nautical miles/5,386 kilometers was covered in 6 hours and 16 minutes at an average speed of Mach 0.82.

Pending approval by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association, the G280’s 51st city-pair mark will be sent to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland for consideration as a world record.

Gulfstream G280

“It’s a testament to the G280’s many attributes that we’ve delivered more than 60 of these aircraft to operators in 11 countries,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “The G280 had the best range, speed, fuel efficiency and cabin comfort in its class when it entered the marketplace in November 2012, and nothing has changed. It is also one of the most reliable aircraft in the industry.”

Originally projected to fly 3,400 nm/6,297 km, the G280 surpassed expectations by 200 nm/370 km, resulting in more city-pair connections, excellent fuel efficiency and lower operating costs for customers. The aircraft has tremendous performance capabilities and a superior cabin with the Gulfstream-designed cabin management and high-definition entertainment systems, industry-leading sound levels, 19 super-sized windows and in-flight access to the baggage compartment.

Airlines over order at Paris Airshow

The last week was a good one to be a commercial aircraft salesman. Airlines and leasing companies placed options for 1,223 aircraft worth $69 billion at list prices at the Paris Airshow this week. (Obviously many of these aircraft will not be delivered to airlines and no one paid list price, but we should not let that get in the way of a good story).

Airbus and Boeing have sold out production for an astonishing eight to 10 years. Low oil prices are helping airlines make profits and carriers and leasing companies are keen to buy.  Both manufacturers have had three years of record orders. This is a complete contrast to business jet OEMs where backlogs are still falling. Commercial OEMs are upping production whilst we will see less business jets delivered this year rather than next. Bombardier did not announce big orders for the C-Series, but hopefully these are on the way.

Chasing business jets – a guide for business jet spotters

Business jets do not just give pleasure to the people that fly in them. Many people get a buzz just from just seeing a one.

Others take this passion more seriously. There are thousands of amateur aviation photographers (many as good as professionals) and planespotters looking to track down business jets.

Whilst most photographers just collect images, planespotters collect aircraft registrations or manufacturers serial numbers (MSNs) by seeing the aircraft. (You can usually work out the MSN from the aircraft registration, although this is hard in some countries.)

Falcon50_T7DFX at Le Bourget

Aviation photographers are spread throughout the world. With the US and Japan in particular seeming to have many good ones (Japan also deserves credit for encouraging enthusiasts, every airport has at least one viewing platform). Although there are planespotters in every country, it is most popular in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK. No one knows exactly how many planespotters are in each country but there are specialist magazines and books serving the community.

The Monaco 2050 superyacht private-jet set

A step up from offering a helipad and helicopter, the proposed Monaco 2050 superyacht features a detachable private jet that takes off vertically

A superyacht built and decorated to their precise specifications remains an enduringly popular indulgence among the world’s richest, and the unparalleled degree of personalisation they can avail of means their purchases can vary drastically from one another.

Monaco+2050+1 superyacht

Moscow-born Monaco resident Vasily Klyukin, the co-founder of Russia’s Sovcombank, is one entrepreneur seeking to more radically shape the form of future superyachts, by releasing a concept design for the type of vessel he would like to own in the years to come.

His Monaco 2050 proposal (so called because he expects it to set a new industry standard within the next 35 years) considers what billionaires will next desire now that yachts with helipads and helicopters are becoming something of a superyacht standard. In their place Klyukin envisions a boat that will also serve as a launch pad for private jets that can take off vertically.

Gulfstream G280 Gets Performance Boost Through Software Upgrade

Update Improves Landing Distance, Enhances Flight Management System and Enables Synthetic Vision

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. announced that an avionics software upgrade resulting in improved aircraft performance is now available for the Gulfstream G280.

Gulfstream G280

The new PlaneView280TM software, offered in conjunction with supplier Rockwell Collins, results in slower approach speeds, shorter landing distances, and enhanced flight management system performance.

“The G280 was already a top-performing aircraft in its class,” said Dan Nale, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “With this upgrade, the aircraft’s performance is even better. Our customers will appreciate the increased functionality and utility, the operational improvements, the enhanced display layout and the improved situational awareness.”

The upgrade reduces G280 approach speeds by up to 9 knots. The landing distance with the new software is 2,380 feet/725 meters, a decrease of 270 ft/82 m.

Cessna Citation Latitude begins European tour

Cessna has begun a three-week European demonstration tour of its new Citation Latitude with the annual Business and General Aviation day (BGAD), held on 15 September at London Biggin Hill airport – the first stop on its multi-city itinerary.

The $16.3 million, midsize business jet is the newest aircraft in Cessna’s 16-strong product line. It secured FAA certification in June, following a three-and-a-half year development effort, and entered service with a US owner in August.

Cessna Citation Latitude begins Europe tour

The Textron Aviation subsidiary now anticipates European validation for the nine-seat aircraft in the fourth quarter. “We are eager to get the Latitude approved in Europe so we can begin deliveries to our customers here,” says Textron Aviation’s vice-president of sales for Europe, Tom Perry.

Europe is one of the largest markets for the Citation business jet family with an inventory of around 830 aircraft…

Embraer Executive Jets Legacy 450 Gains EASA Certification

Embraer Executive Jets Legacy 450 has received type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The aircraft has met or surpassed all design goals, exceeding targets such as range, runway performance, hot-and-high takeoff distance and maximum payload. The conclusion of the process in Europe follows the recent certification granted by the Brazil and U.S. aviation agencies.

“This is a great achievement that paves the way for deliveries to begin in the member states of the European Union as well as in EASA-associated countries,” said Marco Tulio Pellegrini, President & CEO of Embraer Executive Jets. “The Legacy 450 is a revolutionary business jet that re-enforces our commitment to deliver true innovation to the market.”

Embraer Legacy 450 EASA certified

With a range of up to 2,575 nautical miles (4,769 km), the mid-light Legacy 450 can fly nonstop from New York to Las Vegas, Dubai to Moscow and Jakarta to Hong Kong. The aircraft has the largest cabin in its class, comfortable seating for up to 9 passengers, and is the first jet in its category to replace conventional controls with full digital fly-by-wire technology.

Gulfstream G150 Positioned For Long Life In Fleet

Swan song for the smallest Gulfstream

The G150 is something of a head-scratcher in the used aircraft market because, “There’s a disconnect between the price sellers will accept and the prices buyers are willing to pay,” says Jay Mesinger, president of Mesinger Jet Sales in Boulder, Colorado. “Sellers have been asking $6 million to $8 million and buyers are willing to pay $4 million to $5 million. That creates a quagmire.”

Gulfstream G150 at NBAA 2014

Yet, the G150 is one of the fastest and most cost-effective mid-light business aircraft that is capable of flying non-stop between most coastal cities in the U.S. Assuming an ideal NBAA profile, it can fly four passengers 2,988 nm at its long-range cruise speed. It offers slightly better range performance compared to the cramped G100 from which it is derived. In addition, its cabin is 12-in. wider than its predecessor and its wide-oval cross-section actually makes available more usable head and shoulder room than some larger midsize jets having circular fuselages.

Gulfstream G150 mid light business jet tail

Many potential used jet buyers, however, shied away from the G150 in favor of the Citation Sovereign, which has slightly less range, but a longer cabin and class-leading short-field performance. The Sovereign sells for $6 million to $7 million in the resale market, Mesinger notes.

The New-Generation Aviation Director

It takes a strong flight department leader who is attuned to the business needs of the company to bridge the gap between hangar and headquarters.

New Generation Aviation Director

“Closing the Gap Between Hangar and Headquarters,” which appeared in the May/June edition of Business Aviation Insider, looked at the divide between many flight departments and their company headquarters. This second story in the four-part series on this subject provides recommendations on how an aviation director with the right business and communication skills can form a strong partnership between the flight department and company headquarters.

In today’s evolving corporate environment, what essential attributes should a strong aviation director or flight department manager have?

“Flight departments need to make a shift in how they view the requisite skill set for an effective aviation director,” said Mike Nichols, NBAA’s vice president of operational excellence and professional development. “Historically, the flight department director has been the most senior pilot. Going forward, companies expect their flight departments to be run by skilled leaders and asset managers.”

Steve Brechter, senior advisor of operations at Gray Stone Advisors – a Knoxville, TN-based advisory firm that helps business aviation leaders align flight department operations with corporate expectations – suggests there are four critical attributes of a good aviation director:

Business acumen

Astute communication

Proactive asset management

Effective partnering with the parent company
