Airlines over order at Paris Airshow

The last week was a good one to be a commercial aircraft salesman. Airlines and leasing companies placed options for 1,223 aircraft worth $69 billion at list prices at the Paris Airshow this week. (Obviously many of these aircraft will not be delivered to airlines and no one paid list price, but we should not let that get in the way of a good story).

Airbus and Boeing have sold out production for an astonishing eight to 10 years. Low oil prices are helping airlines make profits and carriers and leasing companies are keen to buy.  Both manufacturers have had three years of record orders. This is a complete contrast to business jet OEMs where backlogs are still falling. Commercial OEMs are upping production whilst we will see less business jets delivered this year rather than next. Bombardier did not announce big orders for the C-Series, but hopefully these are on the way.

Fractional operator Flexjet has taken delivery of its first Gulfstream G450. You can charter a Gulfstream 450 from JetOptions.

Chasing business jets – a guide for business jet spotters

Business jets do not just give pleasure to the people that fly in them. Many people get a buzz just from just seeing a one.

Others take this passion more seriously. There are thousands of amateur aviation photographers (many as good as professionals) and planespotters looking to track down business jets.

Whilst most photographers just collect images, planespotters collect aircraft registrations or manufacturers serial numbers (MSNs) by seeing the aircraft. (You can usually work out the MSN from the aircraft registration, although this is hard in some countries.)

Rolls-Royce stays committed to business aviation despite £50m profit hit

Engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has stressed the continued importance of business aviation to the UK firm, despite falling demand in the segment contributing around £50 million ($77 million) to an expected £300 million profit “headwind” in 2016.

The bulk of this total will come from its commercial airliner Trent 700 programme, with weaker demand in the regional jet aftermarket also contributing – but the charge also illustrates the problems R-R is experiencing in business aviation

Not only has R-R been hit by the falling production rates of Bombardier‘s flagship Global 5000 and 6000 – which are powered by the BR710A2-20 – but it has also been losing market share to its rivals in the lucrative large-cabin sector.

Bombardier Shares Hit New 22-Year Low on Concerns About Business Jets, Cseries

Bombardier‘s stock hit a new 22-year low Friday amid reports that its new Global 7000-8000 business jet may be delayed and erroneous concerns that a major Chinese airline has turned to Boeing instead of the Montreal company’s CSeries.

The shares hit a low of $1.84 in early trading, but were down just one cent in early afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

That followed a more than 10 per cent dip on Thursday.

The last time Bombardier‘s shares (TSX:BBD.B) plunged so low was in 1993.

Thursday’s selloff followed a Bloomberg report that cited a company official who said Bombardier‘s new leadership team is conducting “a full review of all aspects of the program, including its schedule” for its new Global aircraft.

David Tyerman of Canaccord Genuity said such a delay should not come as a surprise given that Bombardier hasn’t provided an update on the development of the Global 7000 and 8000, including the date for first flight.

On The Radar: Head-Mounted Display

Business aviation has long been at the forefront of new technology—most of it developed to improve pilots’ situation awareness and reduce their workload—that would be the envy of commercial airline crews.

An example is synthetic vision, a 3D rendering of runways and terrain that gives pilots a sunny-day virtual view of the flight path in front of them. The first FAA-certified application of such a system was available as part of the Gulfstream Aerospace PlaneView flight deck in 2009. It could be as many as five years before such technology begins to make its way into commercial and business aviation as part of a voluntary safety upgrade movement spurred by the government and the Industry Commercial Aviation Safety Team.

What sort of technologies might be on business aviation’s horizon? One possibility is head-mounted displays (HMD) for pilots, which could be retrofitted in existing cockpits and for aircraft in development.

Gulfstream Opens Additional Maintenance Hangar in Brunswick, Georgia

New Facility Expected To Bring 100 Jobs And Doubles Site’s Aircraft Capacity

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced it has officially expanded its service center in Brunswick, Georgia, with the opening of a newly constructed hangar. The hangar has been fully operational since May 29, 2015.

The nearly 110,000-square-foot/9,290 square-meter hangar at Brunswick Golden Isles Airport complements an adjacent Gulfstream maintenance facility and completions center. The new building accommodates all Gulfstream aircraft models and more than doubles the site’s under-roof capacity from a mixture of seven large-cabin aircraft to as many as 16. The expansion, which was announced in January 2014, has resulted in more than 60 new jobs at the site. Approximately 40 more positions are expected to be added this year.

Textron Aviation turns integration focus to piston-powered aircraft

Since its founding less than 18 months ago, Textron Aviation has been quite busy. First, there was the critical task of blending two historically competitive organisations – Cessna and Beechcraft – into a unitary corporate system. Cessna also needed to concentrate on completing certification programmes of several upgraded and new aircraft in its Citation jet family.

For the pistons business, on the other hand, the focus through the transition appeared to be on maintaining the status quo. A 2012 teaser by the now-defunct Hawker Beechcraft showing four new aircraft concepts on the drawing boards, including three new small turboprops and one piston-powered aircraft, has received no promotion by the new management. A diesel-powered version of the Cessna 182 is now months behind schedule, with no public timetable for delivering the new aircraft.

Despite the slow pace of progress on product development, there are signs entering this year’s EAA AirVenture fly-in in Oshkosh that the next and final step in the integration of Textron Aviation plan has already started, and it is focusing on working out the pistons business.

Low-Carbon, Renewable Jet Fuel To Be Used In Daily Operations

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. and its fuel supplier, World Fuel Services Inc., recently finalized a three-year agreement that provides Gulfstream with a consistent supply of renewable fuels for its daily flight operations in Savannah.

The fuel is a 30/70 blend of low-carbon, drop-in renewable fuel and Jet-A. It provides the same performance as conventional, petroleum-based jet fuel and requires no changes to factory-standard engines or aircraft. Each gallon of renewable fuel burned is expected to achieve a more than 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, relative to petroleum-based jet fuel, on a lifecycle basis.

“This agreement with World Fuel is a testament to Gulfstream’s commitment to sustainability,” said Larry Flynn, president, Gulfstream. “We were the first in the business aviation industry to fly our full fleet to the National Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition on renewable fuels, and the Gulfstream G450 was the first business jet to cross the Atlantic using renewable fuels.

With this agreement, Gulfstream is expected to become the first business jet manufacturer to use renewable fuels on a day-to-day basis, another step in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and help our industry achieve its sustainability goals.”

Gulfstream Makes Significant Progress On G500 And G600 Programs

More Than 34,000 Hours Of Lab Testing Complete

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. today announced that development programs for its all-new aircraft family, the Gulfstream G500 and G600, are well under way; with two of five G500 flight-test aircraft complete and the remaining three in production. The G500 has completed its operational checks and is undergoing taxi validation prior to first flight.

Gulfstream introduced the G500 and G600 on Oct. 14, 2014, at one of its new manufacturing facilities in Savannah. During the event, the first G500 rolled out under its own power.

Since then, Gulfstream has inducted two G500 aircraft into the flight-test center in preparation for officially launching the flight-test program later this quarter. Additionally, ground vibration and structural mode interaction testing are complete; the structural test article achieved limit load; and all suppliers have validated the aircraft safety of flight requirements, clearing the aircraft for flight.

Gulfstream has also started manufacturing the first G600 aircraft, which will be used as part of the four-aircraft flight-test program. Wind-tunnel testing for both aircraft is complete, and more than 34,000 hours of lab testing have been logged. Additionally, the company recently started testing in the G600 integration test facility (ITF) and initiated construction of the G600 iron bird, which will allow full evaluation of the aircraft’s systems and software.

Aircraft Links Casablanca With New York And Dubai

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently celebrated a milestone with the entry-into-service of its first G280 business jet registered in Morocco. The G280 received a type acceptance certificate in March from Morocco’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, whose approval was based on the aircraft’s type certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in February 2013.

Milestone Delivery Reflects G550’s Status As Market Leader

Aerospace Corp. recently delivered the 500th Gulfstream G550. The customer, Abbott, headquartered in Abbott Park, Illinois, has taken delivery of the aircraft.

The G550 can fly up to 51,000 feet/15,545 meters and at speeds up to Mach 0.885. The G550 cabin can be configured with three or four seating areas and can accommodate up to 18 passengers.

Gulfstream G650ER Continues Record Run

Aircraft Connects Major Hubs, Claims Two More Speed Records

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently announced that its newest flagship, the Gulfstream G650ER, has connected three cities in record time.

On April 23, the aircraft departed London Luton Airport and touched down at Hong Kong International Airport, flying 5,588 nautical miles/10,349 kilometers at an average speed of Mach 0.90 for 10 hours and 27 minutes. The aircraft then departed Hong Kong on April 25 and flew 5,905 nm/10,936 km at an average speed of Mach 0.90, landing at King County International Airport/Boeing Field in Seattle to complete the flight in 10 hours and 25 minutes. Both times, the aircraft landed with fuel in excess of National Business Aviation Association’s instrument flight rules reserves.

“The G650ER sets a new standard in business travel,” said Scott Neal, senior vice president, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, Gulfstream. “Many of our customers routinely travel these routes. Being able to get them there faster is one of the many reasons why the G650ER is the most capable and technologically advanced business jet on the market.”

Pending approval by the U.S. National Aeronautic Association, the city-pair records will be sent to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland for recognition as world records.

In addition to these recent records, the G650ER set two speed records during flight testing in 2014 when it flew from Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia, at an average speed of Mach 0.86, and then from Hong Kong to Teterboro, New Jersey, at an average speed of Mach 0.865. In February, the aircraft circled the globe with just one stop and also completed the farthest flight in its history, traveling 8,000 nm/14,816 km from Singapore to Las Vegas nonstop.

Gulfstream G500 Completes First Flight

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, today announced that the all-new Gulfstream G500 successfully completed its first flight. The G500 is part of Gulfstream’s new family of clean-sheet aircraft, the G500 and G600, and the first of the two to begin flight tests.

The G500 took off at 10:39 a.m. May 18 from Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport, with Gulfstream experimental test pilots Scott Martin and Kevin Claffy at the controls. Flight Test engineer Bill Osborne provided on-board support.

The aircraft climbed to an initial altitude of 10,500 feet/3,200 meters and reached a maximum altitude of 15,000 ft/4,572 m. During the 2-hour-and-16-minute flight, the crew exercised all primary flight control systems; evaluated handling qualities in takeoff and landing configurations; performed a simulated approach and go-around; and checked all systems using the SymmetryTM flight deck touchscreen controllers. The aircraft achieved a maximum air speed of 194 knots. It landed back in Savannah at 12:55 p.m. local time.

“The successful first flight of N500GA represents the tremendous investments we have made in the G500 program,” said Dan Nale, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “We have achieved this milestone thanks to Gulfstream’s world-class research and development teams and our commitment to setting new standards for business aviation.”

Business Aviation Activity Numbers Still Down, Pilatus PC-24 Takes Maiden Flight, Embraer 1st Quarter Sales Down

Europe’s business aviation activity continues to decline. The decrease is mainly due to the reduction of activity from Russia due to sanctions. The Pilatus PC-24 takes its first flight and Embraer first quarter sales are down.

Business Aviation Numbers Still Negative, Though Eurozone Slightly Recovering

There were 62,968 business aviation flight departures in Europe in April 2015, 508 fewer than in April 2014; a 0.8% YOY decline. The declining trend in 2015 has narrowed, but is still -2.7% year to date.

France and Germany propped up the market, gaining up to 4%. However this was largely driven by Piston and Turboprop activity. Business jets flew 57% of all flights in Europe, with jet charters falling 3% YOY.

The recent growth trend in the UK came off in April, with a 1% slowdown. This was evident in diminished activity at Luton and Farnborough, although Biggin Hill was one of Europe´s faster growing airports for the month.

Collapse in business aviation activity in Eastern Europe and Russia continues, with flights inbound from the CIS down 26%. Flights from Europe to Russia were down 20% YOY, less than YTD -25% trend, so the impact may be bottoming out.

The renewed slowdown in activity is clearly not just related to the Eurozone periphery, as indicated by flight reductions in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, particularly Belgium. Mostly the drop came in AOC flights.

There were still some growth regions, notably Turkey, Czech Republic, also Austria where Charter increased 8% YOY. Inbound flights from North America were up 6%, from North Africa up 14%, from Asia-Pacific, up 18%.

Ultra long range aircraft continued to gain activity, maintaining a 6% 12 month trend. Falcon 7X ULR jets flew 14% more YOY. Gulfstream ULR jets flew less, for example Gulfstream V/500 activity was down 6% this month.

Very light jet activity slumped in April, down 11% in flight hours, mostly due to fewer Owner flights. Overall, the light jet segment flew less, but there were strong gains for certain types, including CJ1 and Phenom 300.

Pilatus PC-24 Takes Off on Its Maiden Flight

The first ever PC-24 Super Versatile Jet took off on its maiden flight today at 10.00 local time from Buochs airport. Just under 1800 Pilatus staff, all of whom are directly or indirectly involved in the PC-24 project, were there to applaud the business jet as it taxied for takeoff. Prototype P01, call sign HB-VXA, flew across central Switzerland for a total of 55 minutes. The flight went exactly as planned with no problems whatsoever.

The PC-24 is capable of exceptional performance, and this maiden flight was a first opportunity to showcase some impressive credentials: the twin-engine business jet took off from runway 07 in just under 600 m and climbed to 10,000 feet (approx. 3000 m) in around three minutes, where the two pilots completed a series of meticulously planned tests. The maiden flight followed a route across central Switzerland – from Altdorf to Brünig via Engelberg.

Test pilot Paul Mulcahy, who has some 11,000 hours under his belt, flew the PC-24 as pilot in command. He has already test flown countless aircraft types and has acquired a wealth of experience on twin-engine business jets. “Everything looks great so far! Beautiful handling – the PC-24 flies just as expected – a real Pilatus aircraft!”, reported our second experienced test pilot, Reto Aeschlimann, by radio from the cockpit.

Throughout the flight the PC-24 was accompanied and monitored by a PC-21. As is normal on maiden flights, the PC-24 landing gear was not retracted on this occasion. Twelve flight test engineers watched the flight from the ground as they kept an eye on a stream of real-time flight data received from the PC-24. Had the need arisen, these experts could have given the pilots crucial decision-making information: another means of ensuring the safest possible conditions for the entire maiden flight.

Also we have a buyer’s and investor’s guide to the Pilatus PC-24 which was unveiled at EBACE 2014 in Geneva. HondaJet is inching closer to production, and if you have 1 million dollars a week to charter a super yacht it’s name is Solandge.

Bombardier to Highlight its Business Jet Lineup at ABACE 2015

Bombardier Business Aircraft announced today that it will showcase its class-defining business aircraft at this year’s Asian Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (ABACE) show at Shanghai’s Hongqiao Airport in China from April 14 to 16, 2015. Bombardier will be showcasing its Challenger 350 and Challenger 605 aircraft. Other Bombardier aircraft on display include a Challenger 300, Challenger 850 and Global 6000 aircraft

Verdict

For: The ability to land of virtually any kind of surface opens up the Pilatus PC-24 to new markets that were previously closed off to private jets. As a unique selling point, this gives the PC-24 a serious edge in a very competitive marketplace.

Its versatility is also very impressive, affording owners the luxury of being able to quickly change the cabin from executive to cargo configuration between legs.

Against: The light jet market is very competitive. Cessna decided to slow down production of its Citation jets instead of heavily discount values, while Embraer led the market for two years straight, with the popular Phenom 300 emerging as the most-delivered new business jet model in both 2013 and 2014.

HondaJet is happening

A lot of important things have happened since Honda first started its business jet programme in 1997. But last week’s award of a provisional type certificate to the HondaJet means that the first deliveries are finally in sight.

Honda – and the 14 business jet programmes that have failed since HondaJet launched – shows just how difficult it is to enter the business jet market. (And it makes Embraer’s achievements even more impressive given that it only moved into business aviation in 2000).

Honda has hired some brilliant talents from across the aviation industry, but there are no quick fixes with certification (although they could have sped up if they had taken someone else’s engine).

Now this is fun. It’s yet another sunny day in the Caribbean – blue sky, 27C, gorgeous beaches, divebombing pelicans – and I’m discovering the thrills of wakesurfing with a Centurion Enzo SV244 speedboat. Purpose-built for this exhilarating sport, where you surf behind the boat on a driver-controlled ridge of surf, its most striking feature is an overhead arch with four large speakers out of which are blasting the not-mellow tunes of Daft Punk, Cut Copy and Disclosure. As our party takes turns to slalom over the waves, flip wakeboards and come a glorious cropper (all caught on GoPro, sorry guys), it all seems a deliciously 21st-century version of the age-old pleasure of messing about in boats.

Except that this is just the beginning. The Centurion is merely one in an arsenal of watersports “toys” that can emerge from the twin flip-up doors of the tender garage of the 280ft superyacht Solandge. Launched in October 2013, and based in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, this gleaming navy-blue and white six-deck ship of dreams costs a cool $1million (£650,000) to charter for a week. At least.

Cessna Citation Mustang: Buyer’s and Investor’s Guide

Our verdict

For: The Cessna Citation Mustang is a well-built small jet that can comfortably carry two or three passengers for a few hours. If you regularly fly short distances – such as London to Nice – a Citation Mustang could be the perfect aircraft.

The fact that the Citation Mustang is popular in the charter market tells you everything you need to know about the aircraft’s value and efficiency. Of course, its success and its competitive price tag go hand in hand, but its low operating costs are just as attractive.



Against: The low range of the Cessna Citation Mustang means it is a niche aircraft. First delivered at the top of the business jet market, the Citation Mustang had a great start but demand has definitely fallen (the same is also true for its closest competitors like Embraer’s Phenom 100 and the Eclipse 500).

It really is hard to find much fault with the Mustang when it is priced so much lower than its main competitors, but if you’re add an extra $2 million to your budget, you might find that the Mustang suddenly looks rather humble in comparison to some of the better performing – and slightly larger – light jets.

Kenny Dichter launched Wheels Up, a private aviation membership company, in August 2013, placing a record-breaking turboprop order with Beechcraft for up to 105 King Air 350is thought to be worth $1.4 billion including maintenance.

By the end of 2014, Wheels Up had signed up 1,000 members and had grown its aircraft fleet to comprise of 27 brand new King Airs and 10 fully-refurbished Citation jets from Cessna. The company also became the exclusive sales agent for VistaJet’s US business jet fleet – managed by Jet Vitiation – and signed a partnership with JetSuite.

As Wheels Up continues to grow both its fleet and global membership base, the company plans to add a wider range of private jets and helicopters to its aircraft fleet (the company only expects around 30 per cent of its revenues to come from its King Air fleet), which its members will be able to charter at an hourly rate. It also plans to expand into Europe.

Starting at $15,750 a year, Wheels Up members can enjoy exclusive events and a concierge service, courtesy of Wheels Down, which runs as an affiliated lifestyle brand.

VistaJet has sold off the last of its Bombardier LearJet 60 private jets, ending the company’s association with light jets.

The company had operated a total of 20 LearJet 60s since they took delivery of their first aircraft in 2004.

The last LearJet 60 left London’s Northolt Airport to the US where it has been sold.

During VistaJet service, the combined fleet of LearJet 60s clocked up 42,962 hours over 18,262 flights, which the company says is equivalent to 500 trips around the world.

“Today is a very emotional day. The Learjet 60 was my first aircraft and the catalyst for the company we know as VistaJet today,” said Thomas Flohr, founder and chairman of VistaJet. “Learjet aircraft are fast and agile, pilots love to fly them and the cabin volume is generous, so passengers are always comfortable.”

FAA Revokes GlobalJet’s Air Carrier Certificate

FAA Alleges The Company Operated A Cessna 550 For Compensation Without Authorization

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has revoked the air carrier certificate of GlobalJet NA, LLC of Scottsdale, Ariz., for allegedly conducting unauthorized operations for compensation or hire in violation of the Federal Aviation Regulations.

The FAA alleges GlobalJet operated a Cessna 550 jet on at least 47 flights for compensation or hire when it was not authorized to use the aircraft for these operations. When the FAA requested GlobalJet records for the flights, the company allegedly provided falsified logs showing the flights were not for compensation, and withheld invoices showing it had in fact been paid for them.

Additionally, the FAA alleges GlobalJet conducted flights for compensation or hire during a 12-month period when it did not have a qualified chief pilot. GlobalJet also allegedly used crew members unqualified for for-compensation or for-hire operations on over 140 revenue flights during the same 12-month period. The agency alleges that GlobalJet knew it did not have a qualified chief pilot and was using unqualified crew members.

The FAA’s revocation order alleges that GlobalJet knowingly violated Federal Aviation Regulations, demonstrated a complete disregard for public safety and poses an unacceptable risk to aviation safety.

The company has surrendered its certificate in response to the FAA’s order. It has appealed the order to the NTSB.
