About Los Angeles International Airport
Not only is Los Angeles International Airport the busiest and most significant in L.A. and California, but it’s also one of America’s busiest airports.
History
The land that LAX now occupies was once part of the Rancho Sausal Redondo, a large Mexican land grant that existed when California was still a Mexican province. Over the years, ownership of this land changed, until, in 1927, a group of local citizens began to put together the idea of creating a major airport. Los Angeles City Council also started to voice its interests in building a municipal airport, which eventually led to 640 acres of land being offered for the use of the airport.
William W. Mines was the estate agent who represented James Martin (the owner of the land), which is why the airport was initially known as “Mines Field.” In 1941, it became known as Los Angeles Airport before it graduated to Los Angeles International Airport in 1949.
LAX Location
LAX is located approximately 16 miles from Downtown L.A. within Westchester, a beach community. This places it at the heart of L.A. County, making it convenient to travel to and from local business centers, tourist sites, and culture hubs. The onsite fixed base operators are located in smaller terminals outside of LAX‘s main terminal loop and away from the associated commercial airline traffic.
LAX Private Plane Facilities
Los Angeles International Airport has nine terminals in total, which contain a plethora of restaurants, cafes, duty-free shops, gift shops, and newsstands. And for private jet travelers, there’s even a separate runway. This means you can avoid all of the delays that often arise due to the airport’s vast amounts of traffic during peak times. There are also two landing pads (H1 and H3 runways) located on-site.
