Here’s a look at some of the airports around LAX that accommodate private aviation:

1. Van Nuys Airport (VNY)

Van Nuys Airport is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world and a popular choice for private jet travelers. Located in the San Fernando Valley, about 20 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles, VNY provides an exclusive and less congested alternative to LAX. With several fixed base operators (FBOs) offering high-quality services, it’s a preferred choice for celebrities, business executives, and other discerning travelers.

2. Bob Hope Airport (Burbank Airport – BUR)

Officially named Hollywood Burbank Airport but still widely known as Bob Hope Airport, this facility is located approximately 17 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles. BUR is smaller and less hectic than LAX, with excellent FBO services that ensure privacy and efficiency for private jet passengers.

3. Long Beach Airport (LGB)

Situated about 25 miles south of Downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach Airport offers a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere for private flyers. 4. John Wayne Airport (SNA)

Located in Orange County, about 40 miles south of LAX, John Wayne Airport serves as a central hub for private jets in the region. SNA is known for its excellent customer service, upscale amenities, and efficient operations. The airport’s location makes it particularly convenient for travelers visiting the areas of Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, and Irvine.

5. Santa Monica Airport (SMO)

Santa Monica Airport is a small but bustling facility located 8 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles. Although it has faced various operational restrictions, it remains a popular choice for private flyers due to its proximity to the neighborhoods of West Los Angeles. The airport offers quick and discreet access to and from the city, but is now extremely limited by its shortened runway.

History of LAX

LAX sits on land once part of Rancho Sausal Redondo. In 1927, local civic leaders and the Los Angeles City Council advanced plans for a municipal airfield, and 640 acres were secured for the project. Representing landowner James Martin, estate agent William W. Mines helped complete the deal. Hence the original name, “Mines Field.” The airport became the Los Angeles Airport in 1941 and was designated the Los Angeles International Airport in 1949.
