History
During the early 20s, the City of Long Beach’s only airport was its vast beach. At the same time, a flight training school was established by Earl Daugherty near Willow Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. Then, in 1923, a 150-acre site was set aside by Long Beach City Council to be used as an airfield. This was named Daugherty Field to celebrate Daugherty’s pioneering contributions toward aviation. It was Southern California’s first municipal airport.
Over time, the airport underwent many renovations, including building two runways in the 1930s, allowing the military to operate from there. And in 1941, the site was increased by 500 acres to make room for the airport terminal. Over the years, new improvements and additions have been made to create the airport people know and love today.
