Long Beach Airport | Los Angeles & Orange County
Long Beach Airport (LBA) was formerly known as Daugherty Field and is located south of downtown Los Angeles near the beach communities within L.A. County and near the north side of Orange County. Due to the City of Long Beach having some noise restrictions in place, there are limitations with early-morning and late-evening air travel.
During the early 20s, the City of Long Beach’s only airport was its vast beach. At the same time, a flight training school was established by Earl Daugherty near Willow Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. Then, in 1923, a 150-acre site was set aside by Long Beach City Council to be used as an airfield. This was named Daugherty Field to celebrate Daugherty’s pioneering contributions toward aviation. It was Southern California’s first municipal airport.
Over time, the airport went under many renovations, including building two runways in the 1930s, which allowed the military to operate from there. And in 1941, the site was increased by a further 500 acres to make room for the airport terminal. New improvements and additions have been made over the years to create the airport people know and love today.
