History

In the early 20s, the City of Long Beach’s only airport was its vast beach. At the same time, Earl Daugherty established a flight training school near Willow Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. Then, in 1923, the Long Beach City Council set aside a 150-acre site to be used as an airfield. This was named Daugherty Field to celebrate Daugherty’s pioneering contributions to aviation. It was Southern California’s first municipal airport.

Over time, the airport underwent many renovations, including building two runways in the 1930s, allowing the military to operate from there. In 1941, the site was increased by 500 acres to make room for the airport terminal. Over the years, new improvements and additions have been made to create the airport people know and love today.
