John Wayne Airport-Orange County (SNA) Jet Charter
John Wayne Orange County Airport is one of five international airports in Southern California, and in 2017, served over 10 million passengers. General aviation flights, including chartered, have been on the increase and in 2017 reached more than 200,000 annually. Currently, there are more private than commercial flights at SNA. It’s still the second busiest commercial airfield in the LA region after LAX and the airport is also the only commercial facility inside of Orange County. Orange County’s other general aviation facility is located in Fullerton, California.
The very first airstrip on the land that now makes up John Wayne Airport was first built in 1923. Originally constructed as part of a flying school it began its life as a simple dirt landing strip, and in 1926, the first hangar was erected. As the airfield grew more substantial, additional hangars were developed, and in 1942, the Santa Ana Army Airfield took up residence at the site.
This led to the closure of the first flying school at Santa Ana. It wasn’t until 1964 that the airport took shape in its now-familiar outline. There were two parallel runways built with the original expansion that still exists today.
This airport was originally named Orange County Airport but was renamed John Wayne Airport in honor of the actor who died in 1979 in nearby Newport Beach.
John Wayne serves Orange County, California and predominantly cities in Southern LA County. The airport is situated near the cities of Irvine, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, and Costa Mesa. The address is officially listed in Santa Ana, although the airport resides off of the Corona Del Mar Freeway and doesn’t touch the city of Santa Ana at all.
