History
The first airstrip on the land that makes up John Wayne Airport was built in 1923. Originally constructed as part of a flying school, it began its life as a simple dirt landing strip, and in 1926, the first hangar was erected. As the airfield grew more substantial, additional hangars were developed, and in 1942, the Santa Ana Army Airfield took up residence at the site.

It wasn’t until 1964 that the airport took shape in its now-familiar outline. Two parallel runways built with the original expansion still exist today. This led to the closure of the first flying school in Santa Ana. The airport was originally named Orange County Airport but was renamed John Wayne Airport in honor of the actor who died in 1979 near Newport Beach.
