The Cannes Film Festival is one of the world’s premier film festivals, drawing Hollywood stars, actors, and filmmakers from around the globe each May to showcase their latest works and share insights with journalists and celebrity attendees in the French Riviera resort town of Cannes. The 76th Cannes Film Festival begins May 16 and runs through May 27. Various films will screen on the Croisette during this edition – both those competing and classic films known as Cannes Classics.
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City stands to make an impressionable debut at Cannes with its all-star cast – Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman among them – but other big-name filmmakers will also make appearances this year, including Haynes (May December), Karim Ainouz (Firebrand) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).
Many celebrities and VIPs travel to Cannes from around the globe each year via private jet, arriving in style to experience everything this city offers. Oscar winners can be expected in this year’s competition, along with plenty of acclaimed works from an array of auteurs. Johnny Depp will star alongside Maiwenn in Jeanne du Barry, which opens the festival. Also of note will be James Blunt and Juliette Binoche in The Passion of Dodin Bouffant, Ethan Hawke, and Pedro Pascal’s Western Strange Way of Life. Asmae El Moudir will present her Moroccan film The Mother of All Lies at this year’s Un Certain Regard section, along with Kleber Mendonca Filho, who premiered both of his movies, Bacurau and Aquarius, last year at this festival.
Noteworthy titles to watch include Aki Kaurismaki’s return with Fallen Leaves and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s About Dry Grasses – his follow-up film following Winter Sleep which won him the Palme d’Or award – about an Istanbul teacher hoping for work in a remote village.
