Miami International Airport, MIA, KMIA

Miami International Airport, also called MIA, formerly Wilcox Field, is the primary commercial airport serving the Miami area. The airport is in Miami-Dade County, eight miles northwest of Downtown Miami. Adjacent to Miami, Hialeah, Doral, Miami Springs, and Virginia Gardens. It is South Florida’s main airport and the second busiest for international flights. KMIA is one of only eight U.S. airports with the runway length to land an Airbus A380 jumbo jet. Only New York has more international flights each year.

Miami International has four long runways suitable for landing jet-class aircraft and the longest-range and largest jets. Situated just 6 miles from the Dolphins’ home at the Hard Rock Stadium, it’s a favorite for football jet charter. Downtown Miami is 14 miles away; it’s 20 miles from Miami Beach and only 9 miles from Miami International Airport.

Miami Executive Airport, TMB, KTMB

Miami Executive Airport operated under Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport until a name change in 2014. TMB is a public airport located 13 miles southwest of Downtown Miami. Miami-Dade County’s Aviation Department manages KTMB. An FAA reliever airport to Miami International provides convenient access to the Florida Turnpike, Ocean Reef, and the Florida Keys. South of Miami, it’s also suitable for charter travel to the nearby recreation and business centers in Miami and Miami Beach.

The airport opened about 1968 and replaced the original Tamiami Airport. Growth and the nearby flight path of   Miami International Airport created the move southwest, near the town of Kendall. TMB is a U.S. Customs port of entry with personnel on hand, and it is a favorite corporate and business jet aviation terminal.

Control Tower Hours are from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. TMB has three runways; two are available to take off and land private plane charters. Four fixed base operators are on-site at KTMB,  offering the full complement of aircraft and passenger terminal services.

Palm Beach International Airport is a public airport three miles west of Palm Beach Island. Located in West Palm Beach, PBI serves northern Greater Miami and the cities of Ft. Lauderdale, Boynton and Delray Beach, Boca Raton, Jupiter, and Port St. Lucie.

Operated by the Palm Beach County Department of Airports in West Palm, KPBI is only 2 miles from the city of Palm Beach. Palm Beach is the furthest east town in the state, and the city proper is on a long barrier island with the Intercoastal Waterway on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. This beautiful barrier island was named for the trees after a shipwreck brought salvaged coconut palms to Havana, and many of the remaining coconut cargo were planted. These plantings created the lush grove of palm trees on what later became Palm Beach.

PBI has a 24-hour FAA Air Traffic Control Tower and three runways, two for jet class aircraft:

  • 10L/28R is 10,000 feet.
  • 14/32 is 6,931 feet.
  • 10R/28L is 3,214 feet.

Three Fixed-Base Operators (FBOs) at PBI provide aircraft fueling, maintenance, hangar, and other airplane services. Private jet passengers have access to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol at KPBI.
