The 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly opens September 8, 2026, at United Nations Headquarters in New York. High-Level Week takes place September 18–28, with the General Debate scheduled for September 22–26 and September 28.
Each September, the General Assembly brings heads of state and government, ministers, diplomats, international organizations, business leaders, and delegations to New York. During the General Debate, world leaders address the General Assembly and outline their governments’ positions and priorities on international issues.
The 2026 program includes the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Moment on September 18, followed by the General Debate and a series of high-level meetings addressing climate action, development, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness, and other international priorities.
High-Level Week also produces an unusually concentrated period of diplomatic and international travel in Manhattan.
