Learjet

Learjet Business Aircraft

Learjet is a pioneering American brand of business jets, initially developed by William Powell Lear. Founded in the late 1950s as the Swiss American Aviation Corporation, the company became renowned for its fast and sleek private aircraft, designed for executive travel. In 1962, the company was renamed Lear Jet Corporation and established its manufacturing base in Wichita, Kansas—a city that remains the spiritual home of Learjet today.

Learjet revolutionized the business aviation market by introducing one of the first private jets available for commercial sale. Its initial success led to decades of innovation in the light and midsize jet categories. Known for their speed, performance, and efficient cabin layouts, Learjets quickly became a preferred choice for executives, celebrities, and government clients seeking time-saving point-to-point travel.

Learjet Under Bombardier

In 1990, Bombardier Aerospace acquired Learjet, integrating the brand into its growing portfolio of business jets alongside the Challenger and Global series. Bombardier continued to produce and market Learjets under the name “Bombardier Learjet Family.” The Learjet 31, Learjet 45, Learjet 60, and Learjet 75 models offered improved avionics, enhanced fuel efficiency, and increased cabin comfort, while maintaining the brand’s signature performance and style.

Although Bombardier officially announced the end of Learjet production in 2021, the legacy of Learjet remains strong. More than 3,000 Learjet aircraft have been delivered worldwide, and many are still active in private, charter, and military fleets. Bombardier’s decision to sunset the Learjet line allows the company to focus on its larger-cabin, longer-range aircraft, primarily in the Challenger and Global jet families.

Learjet Aircraft in Charter

Learjets are still widely available on the charter market. The brand’s aircraft are known for offering a combination of light jet speed with midsize comfort. Commonly chartered models include:

  • Learjet 31A: A light jet with high-speed cruise and seating for 6–7 passengers
  • Learjet 45/45XR: A super light jet that bridges the gap between light and midsize cabins
  • Learjet 60/60XR: A midsize jet popular for coast-to-coast charters
  • Learjet 75: One of the final production models with modern avionics and upgraded interiors

Most Learjets fall within the light jet and midsize jet charter categories, offering a balance of speed, range, and affordability for both business and leisure travelers.
