The Open Championship, often called The Open or the British Open, is the oldest and one of the most prestigious major championships in professional golf. First played in 1860, it is the only major held outside the United States and is governed by the R&A, the ruling body of golf worldwide (excluding the U.S. and Mexico).
Traditionally held in July, The Open is played on a rotation of historic links courses across the United Kingdom, including legendary venues like St Andrews, Royal Birkdale, Royal St George’s, and Royal Liverpool. Since 1979, the tournament has been staged during the weekend of the third Friday in July, serving as the third major of the golf season—following The Masters and the U.S. Open.
