Founded on February 21, 1948, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) is the leading authority on American stock car racing. Based in Daytona Beach, Florida, and still family-owned and operated, NASCAR oversees a wide variety of motorsports events across the United States. It governs three national racing series—the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and the Craftsman Truck Series—as well as several regional and international series.
NASCAR was created by Bill France, Sr. in the aftermath of World War II. By 1947, France had begun organizing racing rules and schedules, and the official sanctioning body was incorporated in 1948. The organization grew rapidly in popularity and prestige through the 1950s and 60s, becoming a cultural staple in the American South and Midwest.
In the mid-1970s, NASCAR began refining its competitive format. Rather than focusing solely on individual race wins, the championship shifted to a season-long points structure to crown its top driver. In 2004, NASCAR introduced the **Chase for the Cup**—a ten-race playoff among the top drivers in regular season standings. This format evolved into today’s **NASCAR Playoffs**, which now features 16 drivers competing in a multi-round elimination format to determine the season champion.
Drivers earn points based on their finishing position in races, laps led, and stage finishes. The system rewards consistency but also heavily values race wins. In the event of a tie in total points, the number of race wins acts as the tiebreaker.
To ensure fans experience a thrilling finish, NASCAR utilizes an overtime rule in all three national series. When a caution occurs late in the race, a restart happens within a designated zone, and the race continues under green-flag conditions for a final, competitive conclusion.
