History
In the early 1920s, the City of Long Beach’s only “airport” was its wide sandy shoreline. Aviation pioneer Earl Daugherty soon changed that by opening a flight training school near Willow Avenue and Long Beach Boulevard. Recognizing the growing importance of air travel, the Long Beach City Council designated a 150-acre site as the city’s first airfield in 1923. Named Daugherty Field in honor of Daugherty’s trailblazing contributions, it became Southern California’s first municipal airport.
The airport continued to evolve throughout the decades. In the 1930s, two paved runways were constructed, paving the way for military operations. By 1941, the site had expanded by an additional 500 acres to accommodate a new passenger terminal. Continuous upgrades, expansions, and facility enhancements over the years have transformed Long Beach Airport (LGB) into the modern, efficient aviation hub it is today—serving both commercial flights and world-class private jet charter operations. Today, LGB private flights connect travelers to destinations across the U.S. and beyond, with quick access to Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Southern California coast.
