Chicago, Illinois
The Windy City has a grand Memorial Day parade each Saturday. But before the largest parade in the nation even gets started, the wreath-laying ceremony begins at 11 am on Daley Plaza. Each year, gold star families, parents, spouses, siblings, and children are gifted yellow roses in remembrance.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Nantucket Island is a picture-perfect New England beach town. It’s 30 miles south of Cape Cod and is accessible by plane, a mere 35-minutes in the air from Boston or by boat. The islands annual holiday parade begins at 1 pm on Sunday, May 26 at the Nantucket Legion Hall.
May 24-27 is also the Figawi Race Weekend from Hyannis Harbor to Nantucket Harbor. This annual yacht regatta takes place on Saturday, May 25.
Indianapolis, Indiana
The city hosts one of the most impressive collections of veteran monuments, statues, and fountains at the Indiana War Memorials and Museum. The Shine Room is a unique tribute to veterans of World War I and is open especially for Memorial and Veterans Day holidays.
The Indianapolis 500 also occurs on Sunday, May 26 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This legendary race opens the field to spectators at 6 am, and the starting flag drops at 12:45 pm.
